MAX5960L Hardware Only Configuration
Software and Hardware Quick Start

Verify that shunts are installed on jumpers JU1,
JU2, JU3, and JU4 ( PRES-DET_ ).
Verify that shunts are installed on pins 1 and 2 of
jumpers JU5, JU6, JU7, JU8, JU11, JU12, JU13,
and JU14 (local switch control).
The MAX5960L EV kit is fully assembled and tested.
Follow these steps to verify board operation. Do not
turn on the power supplies until all connections are
completed.

Verify that a shunt is not installed on jumpers JU9,
JU10, JU15, and JU16 (MRL_).
Utilizing short 25A-rated banana leads (< 12in
long) connect the 12V DC power supply to the
VIN1 banana jack. Utilizing short 25A-rated banana
leads (< 12in long) connect the supply ground to
the GND banana jack.
Utilizing short 25A-rated banana leads (< 12in
long) connect the 3.3V DC power supply to the

One each of the following DC power supplies:
12V, 25A
3.3V, 20A (used to power the main 3.3V and
3.3VAUX inputs)
Maxim MAX5960L EV kit and CMAXQUSB interface
board (USB cable included)
Windows 98SE/2000/XP computer with a spare USB
port
Three voltmeters for confirming output voltages
leads (< 12in long) connect the supply ground to
the GND banana jack.
Note: In the following sections, software-related items are
identified by bolding. Text in bold refers to items directly

Connect the 3.3V DC power supply to the VIN3
banana jack with a short banana lead.

Connect a voltmeter to the 12VA pad and GND.
Connect a voltmeter to the 3.3VA pad and GND.
Connect a voltmeter to the 3.3VAUXA pad and GND.
Set switches SW5, SW7, SW9, SW11 (ON_), and
SW6, SW8, SW10, SW12 (AUXON_) to the OFF
position.
Turn on both power supplies in any sequence.

MAX5960L Software and Hardware Configuration
Visit www.maxim-ic.com/evkitsoftware to download
the latest version of the EV kit software,
5960LRxx.ZIP. Save the EV kit software to a tempo-
rary folder and uncompress the ZIP file.
Install the EV kit software on your computer by run-
ning the INSTALL.EXE program inside the temporary

11) Verify that the voltage at channel A pad is as
shown below:

3.3VA = 3.3V
3.3VAUXA = 3.3V
12) Sliding switches SW5 and SW6 to the OFF position
will disable the channel A main or auxiliary outputs
on the MAX5960L EV kit.
13) For evaluating channels B, C, and D, use analo-
gous actions on steps 10 through 12 above for the
respective channel switch setting and output volt-
age reading. See the Jumper and Switch Selection
section for more information on configuring the
respective channel.
14) Test points are provided to observe the MOSFET’s
gate voltage respectively with an oscilloscope.

VIN2 banana jack. Utilizing short 25A-rated banana
leads (< 12in long) connect the supply ground to
the GND banana jack.
Connect the 3.3V DC power supply to the VIN3
banana jack with a short banana lead. Do not turn
on the power supplies.
